Job Training & Development

The goal of the Job Training & Development Program is to assist tribal members with finding employment in the community. It is important to note that this program is not involved with the hiring for positions within the Catawba Indian Nation. For information on tribal job openings, please visit our employment page.

Since everyone’s situation is different, we take a personalized approach in helping our clients explore various options including career assessments, job searching techniques, resume writing, certificate and on-the-job training programs. When a client comes to see us, we do an extensive intake process where we get to know the job seeker’s experiences, skills, qualifications, likes and dislikes. Once we identify that person’s skills along with any barriers to achieving successful employment, we develop a plan designed to help them find the right fit.
There are number of options we have available in deciding what the best course of action will be for each particular individual.

We can:

  • Provide various vocational services including personal and career assessments, WorkKeys testing, resume help, job searching, and soft skills classes to prepare displaced workers for the new job market.
  • Include you in our Talent Bank  which is a computer database system designed to match job seekers with job openings made known to us through our partnerships with local employers.
  • Provide funding for GED assessment, preparation and testing.
  • Send for training at various educational and training institutions through our Job Placement & Training initiative.
  • Develop On-The-Job training options (OJT) when beneficial to both the employee and the job seeker. This is a flexible process that personalizes the relationship between a job candidate and an employer to meet the needs of both.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING PROGRAM

The Catawba Indian Nation Job Placement and Training Program partners with local employers to create unique, On-the-Job Training options for Native American workers that meet the required guidelines. The purpose of this program is to create an alternative to traditional classroom job-related training. The OJT Program provides reimbursement to employers to help compensate for costs associated with training newly hired tribal employees. The company determines the criteria for selecting a candidate. Training is provided by the employer for a limited period of time. Upon successful completion of the program, trainees will receive a letter of recommendation and consideration to transition into permanent employment with the company, should a position become available.
Section 703(i) of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (as amended), 42 U.S.C. Section 2000(e)-2(i)(1982), provides an exception to Title VII’s General Non-Discrimination Principles allowing certain employers under certain circumstances to exercise an employment preference in favor of American Indians living on or near a reservation. We are not qualified to give legal advice, but simply wish to make you aware of this Indian Preference issue. The following is a link to the EEOC notice which covers the Indian Preference Issue in detail: http://www.eeoc.gov/policy/docs/indian_preference.html
